Developing Basic Reading Skills among EFL Learners

This book grew out of a simple observation, developed at length in Chapter 1: many learners of English as a Foreign Language (EFL) can decode words accurately and yet still struggle to read strategically, that is, to plan, monitor, and adjust their reading in response to a particular text and a particular purpose. Reading researchers have long distinguished between reading skills, which operate automatically and largely outside awareness, and reading strategies, which are deliberate, goal-directed attempts to control and modify the reader’s efforts to understand a text. Strategies are not a substitute for language knowledge; fluent word recognition and a large vocabulary remain the foundation of comprehension. Yet strategies are what allow readers to use that foundation purposefully, especially when a text is difficult, unfamiliar, or written for a purpose different from their own. This book is about building both, and about the connection between them.
